Dog Days Are Over

Florence + The Machine

Lungs

Run fast for your mother and fast for your father
Run for your children for your sisters and brothers
Leave all your love and your longing behind you
Can’t carry it with you if you want to survive

The dog days are over…

The Lineup for Saturday at Kanrocksas, June 29:

Tiesto, Passion Pit, MGMT, Kendrick Lamar, Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros, Zeds Dead, Descendants, Baauer, Rusko, Machine Gun Kelly, Crookers, Son Volt, T-Pain, Tommy Trash, Mord Fustang, Grimes, ZZ Ward, Trinidad James, Hopsin, Action Bronson, Clockwork, The Polyphonic Spree, Three Loco, The Knocks, Destructo, Manufactured Superstars, Blondfire, Camera Obscura, Lowriderz, Air Dubai, Empires, Langhorne Slim.

I got a discounted one-day ticket (can’t go on Friday).  I’ve only seen Passion Pit, ZZ Ward, and Blondfire previously, so I am going to be schooled.  And I’ve never been to a big festival like this before so it should be an eye-opener all around…

6festival, kanrocksas,

I found myself thinking about Sion Russell Jones (@SRJmusic) today.  I saw him play as part of an epic hotel conference room lineup sponsored by The Bedford at SXSW 2012 which included Kiernan McMullan, Marcus Foster, and Ed Sheeran.

Above is an “introducing” kind of video for his EP, So Long, which is also the name of his single that was released recently.  His music has an infectious pop to it, with great detail in the acoustic guitar.

The Welshman doesn’t seem to have any immediate US touring plans, but I’d love it if he did ;)

What do you mean by "hails from the same land as Garrison Keillor"?
Anonymous

They are both from Minnesota and IMO his dry Upper Midwest humor during the show reminded me of Garrison Keillor’s humor in his radio show.  It veered a little too close to “novelty act” for my taste.

Concert Report: Daughter at Record Bar, May 11, 2013, Kansas City, MO:
Daughter came to Kansas City and completely charmed a very enthusiastic sold out show at Record Bar in Westport.  Not straying from a surprisingly deep setlist for a group having just released their first full-length album,  songs were interspersed with lovely banter about barbeque and adorable smiles between Elena and Igor (yup, we all swooned at that look at the end of “Candles”).  I liked seeing drummer Remi play bass and drums at the same time later in the set as well.
My highlights included “Love” (during which Igor wields a bow on his guitar), “Landfill” (a highlight from their debut EP), and “Youth,” which got rotation on our local Indie Rock radio station 96.5 The Buzz.  Evidently they are the only for-profit station in the country playing them regularly!
Jeremy Messersmith (bottom pic), a singer-songwriter from Minneapolis, opened strongly but as his set wore on…let’s just say that I could tell he hails from the same land as Garrison Keillor.  But then, I was disappointed that Wilsen (who opened for Daughter earlier in the tour) couldn’t quite make it this far west…

New video from Chicago band @SmithWesterns “Varsity” is the first song from their new album Soft Will due out June 25.  Excellent dream pop/rock in a video that’s kind of … juicy ;D

And you should know that Usher was in da house for this gig, up on the VIP deck.  Check them out!  Their album, Secondhand Rapture, drops May 14.

My vid of the day is “Drug You” by @halfmoonrun, who are opening for @monstersandmen on their US tour this month. They are energetic and intense, and they deserve to make it to headliner status.

I’ll miss them when they are in KC later this month, sadly.  The above video was when they opened for Metric last fall.  I also saw them at SXSW in March in a church!  You should definitely check out their tour dates here: http://www.halfmoonrun.com/
